Opening: Thursday, 1 October 2020, from 4pm

The Bad Boy Jesus City Swimmers Club,
Tilman Junghans,
Sebastian Kokus im Dialog mit der Jugend,
Sevda Semer

Diverging from the original plan of opening in March, the ABYSSAL—the physical headquarters of the BAD BOY JESUS CITY SWIMMERS CLUB—is now going to open on 01 October 2020 in the Kunstverein’s Bar. The BAD BOY JESUS CITY SWIMMERS CLUB is an association that anyone—swimmers and non-swimmers alike—can join free of charge. It consists of a mailing list that sends out invitations to swim together as well as readers and playlists.

Now, after a long interim in which we broadcasted Recordings from the ABYSSAL, swam and read together, in which a publication and two tapes were produced and in which only a morning gown and some towels told of the ABYSSAL, the BAD BOY JESUS CITY SWIMMERS CLUB is inviting artistic works into it’s space:

Tilman Junghans transformed satellite pictures of plankton swarms into knitting patterns and produced a series of works, which are hanging on the walls like scarfs of football fans. A sound installation by Sebastian Kokus im Dialog mit der Jugend is orbiting through the room, telling about worlds - parallel, separated and connected. For Sevda Semer's work for the ABYSSAL, a text drawing was transmitted onto tiles in Hamburg. In this work she deals with touches as sensual experiences, as a coercion, as a connection and as a superstition to get closer to an abstract-uncanny Unknown.

These works will in the following months frame the activities and events in the ABYSSAL.

Tilman Junghans (born 1987) studied sculpture at HFBK Hamburg in the class of Pia Stadtbäumer. Besides his artistic activities, he works as musician and programmer.

Sebastian Kokus (born 1982) lives and works as self-employed graphic designer in Hamburg and is co-founder of the design studios TEOTH. As a musician he is among other activities part of the band LOVE-SONGS (Bureau B), which since 2012 hovers within the opposing poles of improvised snap-shots and determined patterns and has produced several EPs and one album.

Dialog mit der Jugend (born 2018) is a pseudonym of Mitko Mitkov.

Sevda Semer (born 1990, lives in Sofia) is an artist, who works between painting and sculpture, word and writing.
