Shirley Clark: Portrait of Jason

Shirley Clarke was a pioneer of independent American cinema, began her career as a dancer and turned to filmmaking in the 1950s. In 1962, she founded the New Yorker Film-makers' Cooperative with Jonas Mekas and others. Her film "Portrait of Jason" (1967), shot in one night, is about the Afro-American hustler Jason Holliday.

This screening program is compiled by Annika Larsson in the framework of her exhibition "The Discourse of the Drinkers" and the artistic research project "Non-knowledge, Laughter and the Moving Image" that is led by her. The project is founded by the Swedish Research Council and done in collaboration with The Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm and the HFBK-Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg.
